Skype Offspring #2 - The Rite of Spring, PAF 26 October 2008

During the performance of The Rite of Spring created by The Program in Choreography at the Univ. College of Dance in Stockholm, four persons shared a skype conference chat, and commented on the piece as if they were a collective that had created the work. Non of them had seen the choreography before.

In the chat: Cecilia Bengolea, Valentina Desideri, DD Dorvillier, Jan Ritsema

The Rite of Spring was performed at PAF in St Erme, 25 October 2008.

With and by: Amada Apetrea, Sidney Leoni, Sebastian Lingserius, Halla Olafsdottir, Mårten Spångberg, Johan Thelander

The Rite of Spring

Cecilia Bengolea 9:39
That’s why he s in the piece

DD Dorvillier 9:39
Oh right

Jan Ritsema 9:39
The start is very good
Marten (Spångberg) smiles too much

DD Dorvillier 9:40
yes

Jan Ritsema 9:40
Halla also

DD Dorvillier 9:40
But now it’s ok

Jan Ritsema 9:40
Sidney too

Valentina Desideri 9:40
Amanda is better… just an inviting smile

Jan Ritsema 9:40
Fuck, they all smile

Cecilia Bengolea 9:40
We didn’t tell them to socialize with the public, but they seem so happy, they can not prevent themselves from smiling and flirting with us!

DD Dorvillier 9:41
This one is good the French one (Sidney), he gets it

Jan Ritsema 9:41
It’s going well
Valentina Desideri 9:42
Music should start, no?
We have a technical problem

DD Dorvillier 9:42
Hmmmm

Cecilia Bengolea 9:43
We re in the chapelle in Paf

DD Dorvillier 9:44
I don’t like that tall guy doesn’t have shoes on, because of the particulars of this space, it being cold then i find myself getting involved with this

Cecilia Bengolea 9:44
There’s still light, the dancers are performing the lack of technical support before they start the rite

DD Dorvillier 9:44
Another kind of rite.. it's a little obvious

Valentina Desideri 9:45
It's actually better, much more natural attitude

Jan Ritsema 9:45
Everybody drops the performance now, that is absolutely not good

DD Dorvillier 9:45
Drops? It seemed like they changed modality

Jan Ritsema 9:46
Drops, yes

Cecilia Bengolea 9:46
There are 10 people in the public that starts to get impatient and have hands like pieces of ice

DD Dorvillier 9:46
But you're right

Cecilia Bengolea 9:46 T
The dancers are as well getting cold and worried. The technique does not allow the Ritual to happen they get into socializing again. They speak about vaginas and forests

DD Dorvillier 9:47
Yes

Cecilia Bengolea 9:47
Clearly, sensationalistic themes to keep us awake and busy

Valentina Desideri 9:47
Let's restart

DD Dorvillier 9:48

Yes, please

Jan Ritsema 9:48
Thats interesting they do it differently

DD Dorvillier 9:48
Still Mårten smiling a bit much? The laughing is ok to me

Jan Ritsema 9:49
More agressive towards us not good at all

Cecilia Bengolea 9:49
We laugh like crazy, me in the public with the dancers in front of me, looking at me with love, I feel in danger.

Valentina Desideri 9:49
Yes it has to be made a difference between proximity and producing empathy

Cecilia Bengolea 9:50
The empathy is exaggerated, I understand they don’t love me but they need me to smile at them

DD Dorvillier 9:50
The shoulder touching is a little uncomfortable but then it makes the other interactions stand out as very immediate. Some are dancing some are warming up

Cecilia Bengolea 9:50
Marten makes a grand plie, shaking arms as a ghost
Halla stands in the middle looking at the seeling
Amanda still laughs with her jazzy costumes, from her solo, I guess...
I stop description and I start translation

Valentina Desideri 9:51
Only marten started right in the middle of the movement all the others just went in crescendo. We could find a different organization of the beginning

Cecilia Bengolea 9:52
The arms cutting ice, wind, people, thoughts, caressing horses

DD Dorvillier 9:52
The contact in the middle is not great when it's too random but now the duet is becoming clearer

Cecilia Bengolea 9:52
The pale faces make me think about a post-mortem dance, they are definately cutting trees and killing parents

DD Dorvillier 9:53
Still the cold feet are distracting me

Cecilia Bengolea 9:53
While the tallest is hunting butterflies to put in the salad

DD Dorvillier 9:54
Because his movements though sweet seem more representational than the others

Cecilia Bengolea 9:54
And saying again hello to the world that he suspects LOVES him UNCONDITIONALY

Jan Ritsema 9:54
Fucking good

Cecilia Bengolea 9:54
They are free as the wildness and don’t argue anymore about everyday concepts they go for a immanent sensual connection, it’s obvious.

DD Dorvillier 9:55
The deliberate aspect of labor is present when i can sense the edges or extremities of the bodies

Cecilia Bengolea 9:55
They become part of my favorite heroes they look for hidden holes in the music, the balance they reach is almost supra natural, I mean balance in one leg! And the triangles hanging on top of their heads become a symbolic motive to think of, the triangle, Pyramid, the strongest geometrical form by excellence!

Valentina Desideri 9:57
It's good when they keep the material for long enough

DD Dorvillier 9:58
That was great how they executed the nuthouse section and then shifted out of it

Cecilia Bengolea 9:58
Still in arabesque, he s reaching nirvana

DD Dorvillier 9:58
Their faces changed and their bodies got heavier

Cecilia Bengolea 9:59
And the dance of the shrimp makes the glorious entrance in a world that did not seemed to be meant for shrimps

DD Dorvillier 9:59
Actually i think the shrimping became less and we got the lobster delivered

Cecilia Bengolea 9:59
But they manage to tolerate every specimen of movements in their phantastically free world

DD Dorvillier 9:59
Which is better

Cecilia Bengolea 9:59
Yes, but I m allergic to both shrimp and lobster

DD Dorvillier 10:00
The orbit which Mårten does is especially strong but we have to work on his extension, see when he does this plunge its good, coz he's really working its not such a gesture

Cecilia Bengolea 10:01
There’s an agreement in not taking the central role for what I see till now there’s no Etoile

Valentina Desideri 10:01
There is always a shift from personal ritual to group ritual… it's working well

DD Dorvillier 10:01
I think we've really succeeded in this part here with the jumps

Cecilia Bengolea 10:01
The shrimps come back

DD Dorvillier 10:01
But i still think it should extend into the solo clarinet section I know we are retrieving our previous work with the shrimps but I think it's important to create a distinction here that it's no longer as vague as it used to be

Cecilia Bengolea 10:02
Some seem habituated by a strong evil force that makes them go into catharsis

DD Dorvillier 10:03
Let’s keep the slippery floor for the premiere

Cecilia Bengolea10:03
Oui, and sidney is a great soloist!!!

Jan Ritsema 10:03
It’s going very well

Cecilia Bengolea10:03
He comes from the opera de paris!

Jan Ritsema 10:03
This is the best execution we ever did ever

DD Dorvillier 10:04
Yes, i agree!

Cecilia Bengolea 10:04
The duet expresses all my ideas of friendship and sex, I’m very proud of them!

DD Dorvillier 10:04
Mårten’s looking out is good

Valentina Desideri 10:05
Yes but let's see this part… that's harder

Cecilia Bengolea 10:05
… and Amanda and Marten go for the chaos with out inhibitions, Nijisnky is visible through the angles of their elbows

DD Dorvillier 10:05
Don’t get tired Marten

Cecilia Bengolea 10:06
Repetition is the best solution to make me come

DD Dorvillier 10:06
Bend in the crease of your hips

Cecilia Bengolea 10:06
… and you go for it, solo quite orgasmic, now we can feel the empathique kinestesie! We’re sharing an experience, they don’t present the idea, but rather give us their life, just as rock starts do. To make us shake in the touch that their state produces into ours. I’m becoming a better person while seeing them
Jan Ritsema 10:08
All in the center does not work

Valentina Desideri 10:09
They managed to build tension for a while but after Sidney moved it dropped or better, changed and the centre stayed the same.

DD Dorvillier 10:09
Ah but this working guys because they are gradually getting back to the orbit

Cecilia Bengolea 10:10
Getting purified, I look forward to give my life on stage as well, not in normal life however, I need to give it each time I play and get hot while playing

DD Dorvillier 10:10
The sounds from the women are good timing with the music but the bouncing into hug is weak

Jan Ritsema 10:10
I think next time we should do it without sounds of the girls

DD Dorvillier 10:10
I think the egg hug is good but the bouncing is weird

Valentina Desideri 10:11
No the sound is ok, DD is right

DD Dorvillier 10:11
… and the hallo is too recognizably Swedish

Cecilia Bengolea 10:11
Their game is including language, I didn’t expect this irruption.

Jan Ritsema 10:11
I loose interest completely

Cecilia Bengolea 10:11
They are bored

Jan Ritsema 10:11
But that is partly due to Stravinsky

DD Dorvillier 10:12
Here I like that we might be able to capitalize on the gender separation for a moment

Cecilia Bengolea 10:12
They don’t give anymore the life they were giving, they didn’t eat
DD Dorvillier 10:12
That's due to the gender separation

Jan Ritsema 10:12
Right

Cecilia Bengolea 10:12
But they give their tiredness and it can be quite touching as well

DD Dorvillier 10:12
I really like this part they dont seem tired to me, the boys just look like they are working and I like it

Jan Ritsema 10:12
They are all on themselves, that is wrong, that is how it started this is not allowed to come back, OUT with it!

Cecilia Bengolea 10:13
Tired in a sense of exhaustion, which the Rite needs, their tiredness is decided and choreographed

DD Dorvillier 10:13
Jan, I agree maybe but this on them selves is more interesting than the opening one

Jan Ritsema 10:13
It is illustrative to the music what they did

DD Dorvillier 10:14
Can they start with this on themselves and skip the first one of the opening

Cecilia Bengolea 10:14
The music is so intense in this moment that nothing would be enough to be in the same level

Jan Ritsema 10:14
We have seen this already

DD Dorvillier 10:14
That is what we decided we were going to do isn’t it?

Cecilia Bengolea 10:14
They shouldn’t move in this part

Jan Ritsema 10:14
Good idea

DD Dorvillier 10:14
Or maybe shift drastically the space

Valentina Desideri 10:14
Yes, we said the state of exhaustion should come later and actually it was to open perception towards the outside

DD Dorvillier 10:14
…to very tight

Jan Ritsema 10:15
Be all on a line on my right side

DD Dorvillier 10:15
Very tight together and moving hard and fast far away

Cecilia Bengolea 10:15
Stay still and let the music be visible, it’s redundant the music and the dance

Jan Ritsema 10:15
These islands of all five is not okay

DD Dorvillier 10:15
Sidney has had it! He needs a whistle or a water bottle

Jan Ritsema 10:15
No

Cecilia Bengolea 10:16
Where is transformation?

Jan Ritsema 10:16
Boys, another orgaization in space please

DD Dorvillier 10:16
And here again i think the dance should anticipate the music change a little bit

Cecilia Bengolea 10:16
They keep bussy from one activity to the other. I don t see anything anymore

DD Dorvillier 10:16
Start the snapping just after Sidney cuts loose

Valentina Desideri 10:16
Yes

Jan Ritsema 10:16
This finger sounds on the music. It’s bad

DD Dorvillier 10:16
I think we had a good idea with the finger snapping

Jan Ritsema 10:17
These times are over

DD Dorvillier 10:17
Stravinsky is all about jazz

Jan Ritsema 10:17
They have to go against the music here not illustrate or underline it

Cecilia Bengolea 10:17
Sidnye is laughing and dancing sharply, quite fun, but what is he thinking of?

DD Dorvillier 10:17
Right now I dont see it illustrating it seems more like work again

Cecilia Bengolea 10:18
They need to reconnect the Chakras again to feel the funndament!!

Jan Ritsema 10:18
It’s the same as in the beginning, NOOOOOOOOOOO

DD Dorvillier 10:18
But now the space is getting weak and I'm losing it a little

Cecilia Bengolea 10:18
Amanda Pina, please, come to make them change sex or give birth!!!

DD Dorvillier 10:18
It’s good, Mårten is so close

Jan Ritsema 10:19
Formations please no islands

Cecilia Bengolea 10:19
The space has no hierarchies, that’s for sure! Don’t ask pears to be an almon tree!!

Jan Ritsema 10:19
No individual stories work on togetherness

Cecilia Bengolea 10:19
Sidney is kicking ass!!!!

DD Dorvillier 10:20
Yes
Valentina Desideri 10:20
We need something like the jump session before

DD Dorvillier 10:20
He's doing something to the space I really want to see Halla do that, cut the space like that

Cecilia Bengolea 10:20
I’m soooo happy to see Johan dancing!

DD Dorvillier 10:20
Oh, but her fire building is really good

Jan Ritsema 10:21
Now its better, they form formations

Cecilia Bengolea 10:21
The Graham technique really helped them to curve the back at the exact cello aggressions

DD Dorvillier 10:21
Ok, I think we need to introduce the idea of duets at a distance to get rid of this island groove, maybe not, about the duets I mean

Valentina Desideri 10:22
Or solos but opened to the space and the others.
I think that would already do a lot, also in changing the formations without having to set them too strictly

DD Dorvillier 10:23
I really want to get these women jumping

Cecilia Bengolea 10:23
They’re extending the limits of the space and we can believe their intensity is the best tool to break down the walls of the space

DD Dorvillier 10:23
Coz’ now it's too acting with genders, boys jumping and big and girls slightly hysterical in a ball

Cecilia Bengolea 10:24
Clap Clap Clap Clap! Sweaty, after giving alles experience!!
Impressive!!!! BRAVO!!!!
